What is your opinion on palm oil as alternative energy source?
The oil palm plantations are growing at a rate fast in the tropical countries of Indonesia and Malaysia. These lands were once covered by up to 90% forest just a century ago, while today has fallen below 50%. This is due largely to oil palm plantations. Palm oil has been used historically as a kitchen and cosmetic additive other uses. However, the palm oil industry is now booming with their implementation of clean energy. Europe has made this clean energy hope reduce the global warming problem. Palm oil is about 8-10 times more efficient than ethanol for power. However, tropical forests are being slashed and burned at a record pace in these countries, make room for more palm oil plantations. These areas were rich are the trees and plants and animals which are being converted into a monoculture of oil palm benefits. Think about how the atmosphere is performed when the dense rain forests are burned to a blinding speed.
I do not think that the direct use of palm oil as alternative energy source is a good idea. I, however, that the use of organic waste palm oil from these mills would be a better alternative energy source that would help elliviate groundwater contaminants. Solid waste and biomass liquid is a renewable source of energy that could be transformed into electricity, gas, biodiesel and fertilizers to serve remote rural areas and reduce dependence fuels fossil fuels. I think if we educate the farmers in this area on the potential of their waste products, we can influence them to conserve and be more aware of the impact on the environment locally, regionally and globally. All companies want to realize the savings of running an efficient operation. Therefore, demonstrating their waste products may have profit potential may be the incentive needed to bring this effort to "green-up biz.
