I have a water heater with 1500 watt elements (2) is 10 / 2 AWG and fed a standard 15 amp?
single-pole switch, it runs only one element at a time, is this safe
1,500 watts at 120 volts is 12.5 amps, or 110 volts is 13.64 amps. Must be "safe" on a 15 amp breaker, but I think it would be a long journey. A 15 amp switch is designed to work in 80% of continuous load and 12.5 amps is more than 80%. Therefore, I use a 20 amp AFCI breaker type, this helps protect against the dangerous impacts and fires caused by arcing, addition to the overcurrent protection. Even amplifiers 13.64 is well below 80% of continuous load with a 20 amp circuit breaker 10. cable size is more than strong enough to handle the load, but you need a safety ground, besides the hot and neutral wires.
