How do we convey our briefcase solar design?
Our service learning school group came up with a design of a suitcase which has internal components that allow the user to load the items using the solar panels attached. We have not come to any part of ourselves, but only ordered from several different sites. Is this possible in a patent commons creative-type way? We want nonprofit groups to use our designs. Is it even possible to patent in the first place? Please tell how we can patent, and reference to its source. Thank you.
You can patent the design you up with the briefcase, but not the idea of a solar briefcase. Draw your design (s) and submit to the Patent Office with a description of the function the case. Everything can be done online, but if you really think you have a design worthy of being protected, then you would have to hire a patent attorney to conduct a search for similar patents and properly introduce him.
