You may want to thinking about building their own solar panels ... Let me start by saying we (Agua-Luna) is a nonprofit organization that live, promote and teach 100% "off-grid" living and complete self sufficiency. "To give you an idea of this, do not usually leave the Ranch but once or twice a year. The following steps are taken directly from a DIY guide I offer to those who would like to run their homes with solar energy, reducing your monthly bills utilities or even the sale of electricity by utilities. A sheet of copper flashing from the hardware store. This usually costs about $ 5.00 per square foot. We will need about half a square meter. Two alligator clip leads. A sensitive micro-ammeter that can read currents between 10 and 50 microamps. Radio Shack sells small LCD multimeters that will do, but I surplus used a light rail with a needle. An electric stove. My stove is gas, so I bought a small electric burner plate for about $ 25. 700 watt burners unlikely that does not work - mine is 1100 watts, so the burner is hot. A large clear plastic bottle off which you can cut the top. I used a 2 bottle of one liter of spring water. A mouth glass jar will work great too. Table salt. We will want a couple of tablespoons of salt. Tap water. sandpaper or a wire brush in an electric drill. Sheet metal shears to cut the copper sheet. The first step is to cut a piece copper foil is about the size of the burner of the stove. Wash your hands so you do not have any grease or oil on them. Then wash the plate copper with a mild soap or detergent to get the oil or fat with it. Use the sandpaper or wire brush to thoroughly clean the copper plate, so that any sulphide or other light corrosion is removed. Next, place the cleaned and dried copper sheet on the burner and turn burner to its highest position. As the copper begins to heat up, you will see beautiful oxidation patterns begin to form. Oranges, purples, reds and copper cover. As the copper is heated, the colors are replaced with a layer of black copper oxide. This is not the oxide we want, but flakes off later, showing the reds, oranges, pinks, purples and the copper oxide layer underneath. The last bits of color disappear as the burner is red hot. When the burner is red hot, the sheet copper will be covered with a black cupric oxide coat. Simmer for half an hour, so the black coating is thick. This is important because a thick layer peels well, while a thin layer will remain attached to the copper. After half hour of cooking, turn off the burner. Leave the hot copper on the burner cool slowly. If it cools too quickly, the black oxide will stay stuck to the copper. As the copper cools, it contracts. The black cupric oxide also reduced. But they contract at different rates, which makes copper black oxide flake off. The black flakes, I jump out of copper with enough force to make fly a few inches. This means a little more cleaning effort around the stove, but it is fun to watch. When the copper has cooled to room temperature (this takes about 20 minutes), most of the black oxide will be gone. A light scrubbing with your hands under running water will remove most of the small pieces. Resist the temptation to remove all the black spots by scrubbing hard or soft copper flex. This could damage the delicate layer of red cuprous oxide that we have to provide the work of the solar cell. Cut another sheet of copper the same size as the first. Bend both pieces gently, so that fits in the plastic bottle or jar without touching. The copper oxide coating that was facing up in the background is usually the best side to face outwards in the jar, because it has more smooth, clean surface. Set clamp two cables, one to the new copper plate, and one to the cuprous oxide coated plate. Connect the clean copper plate to the positive terminal of the meter. Connect the cable of copper oxide plate to the negative terminal of the meter. Mix a couple tablespoons of salt in some warm tap water. Add the salt water until all salt is dissolved. Then carefully pour the saltwater into the jar, being careful not to get the clip leads wet. The saltwater should not completely cover the plates - should leave an inch of plate on the water, so that you can move around the solar cell without getting the clip leads wet. Now place in the sun with the magnified on top. The solar cell is a battery, even in the dark, and usually show a few microamps of current. It's that simple.
