Does my landlord have to pay for my water heater rewiring?
I live in Toronto Canada. I am on a flat unmetered water heater service. Toronto Hydro is now discontinuing this option and everyone must have their water heater wired into the meter. The reason I am on the flat plan is because the water heater was never connected to the meter (have been living here 4 months). I have until November 30 to get the rewiring done and inspected or Hydro will cut power to my water heater. My landlord says that I have to pay for it.
Isn't this his responsibility as a landlord? I have never had to pay utilities before, I don't know how this works. I have a feeling this will be very costly and I can't afford it. HELP!!!
If you were in the US, I would say that it is absolutely the landlord's responsibility. Even if you are responsible for paying the hotwater bill, the landlord is responsible for making sure that the hotwater can make it to your apartment.
However, since your are in Canada, your laws may be different. Look up tenants rights in your area.
